The main key points from the RVO documentation:
- EN 13432 Certification: This is the gold standard for compostability. RVO documents confirm that materials with this certificate (such as our coffee capsules) must fully degrade within 12 weeks in an industrial composting facility.
- Biobased Content (NEN-EN 16785-1): The RVO emphasizes the importance of independent assessment to determine the actual percentage of renewable raw materials in a product.

- Optimal Circularity: Compostable capsules made from bio-based material score highest in circularity. This is because both the capsule and the coffee grounds (organic waste) are preserved for the biological cycle.
- Coffee Grounds as Raw Material: The study shows that coffee grounds are a valuable source of nitrogen. By using compostable cups, the capsule acts as a 'transport medium' to get this valuable organic waste to the compost heap instead of to the incinerator.
- MCI Performance: The report substantiates why bio-based capsules can achieve a 100% MCI score, while aluminum and plastic capsules always face material loss and a high energy footprint during recycling.
